Job Summary

Reporting to the chief financial officer (CFO), the Controller will be responsible for oversight of all finance, accounting, and reporting activities. The Controller will be involved in supporting presentations to the board finance and audit committee and will work closely with the senior leadership team. The Controller will lead all day-to-day finance operations including functional responsibility for accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and grants administration.

For nearly 40 years, Allies has been providing thousands of at-risk children and their families with critical, high-quality child development and family wellness programs (including comprehensive early education and Early Head Start services), family strengthening interventions, foster care and adoption services, and a range of vital, integrated services, including mental health services, educational assessments, trauma and disabilities screenings/advocacy, nutrition services, dental and vision screenings, and pediatric health consultations. In 2024, Allies expanded its reach, serving even more children and youth in foster care and those transitioning to adulthood through Extraordinary Families, a program of Allies for Every Child.

  • Directs the organization’s general accounting functions for the entire fiscal cycle. Establishes accounting policies, procedures and processes in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, proper controls and the requirements of funding source contracts
  • Directs financial reporting and analysis to meet organizational needs including internal and external GAAP reporting, cash flow reporting and projection, regulatory reporting requirements, and IRS form 990 and other tax schedules
  • Directs the preparation and successful execution of all finance and accounting-related audits. Directs the planning and preparation for the organization’s annual audit
  • Support an ongoing budgeting process; provides budgeting advice and guidance to senior management; and designs and implements systems to manage and control expenditures
  • Establishes and strengthens working relationships with banks and other financial institutions to ensure the organization’s effective business and banking collaboration
  • Champions and directs the process quality improvement initiative for all finance and accounting-related functions
  • Directs the establishment of and compliance with appropriate systems of financial internal controls, including OMB circular financial standards

Additional Duties:

  • Keeps abreast of current trends and best practices in the non-profit financial and accounting environment

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of direct reports; may supervise staff positions
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws, including interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Master’s degree in finance, accounting, or business preferred; CPA is value added
  • At least six (6) years of experience with financial systems in positions of increasing scope and authority
  • Minimum four (4) years of managerial, supervisory experience
  • Prior non-profit experience managing childcare, EHS, CCTR, CFCC, DCFS and DMH contracts preferred
  • Knowledge of AccuFund accounting system preferred
  • Excellent experience with process quality improvement
  • Excellent experience with project management
  • Excels at working in a collaborative environment
  • Position may require some travel
  • Ability to work without supervision
  • Ability to handle confidential information
  • Maintains privacy, including protecting the confidentiality, safeguarding the integrity and availability, and limiting the use and disclosure of information to authorized individuals and entities.
  • Participates in, conducts, and sustains performance quality improvement activities according to designated role and responsibilities.

  • Fingerprint background clearance (DOJ, FBI & Child Abuse Clearance Index), or approved exemption
  • Successful completion of pre-employment physical and TB test/PPD risk assessment, proof of immunizations for pertussis (Tdap), measles (MMR) and influenza (can decline)
  • Class “C” driver’s license, proof of insurance, a safety record acceptable to CAA, and reliable transportation required

$2500 SIGN-ON INCENTIVE BONUS

Pay Range: $135,000 – $160,000 annual (In accordance with California law, the expected salary range for this California position. The actual compensation will be determined based on experience and other factors permitted by law.)
